Welcome to this one-day course on EEG-monitoring after cardiac arrest! We will focus on how to use EEG for prognostication and for identifying electrographic seizures, including postanoxic status epilepticus. Typical patterns of simplified cEEG and routine EEG will be discussed. We will learn how the cortical EEG activity develops during the first days after the cardiac arrest in different grades of postanoxic injury. Strengths and weaknesses of the simplified technique will also be looked into. We will learn how amplitude integrated trendmonitoring (aEEG) can ease interpretation of long registrations. The afternoon includes a practical session in which you will review simplified EEG-recordings in small groups with guidance from experienced EEG-specialists.
The simplified EEG-montage that we use on cardiac arrest patients in Lund since more than 10 years is applied by the ICU-nurses.
The main goal is to improve your understanding of EEG in the intensive care, especially in the postcardiac arrest setting, and get some basic knowledge on how to perform preliminary bedside interpretations of simplified EEG registrations.

A few years of experience as a physician in clinical neurology, cardiology or intensive care is preferable. Prior experience of EEG interpretation is not necessary and we will start the course with a short session on basic EEG theory.
