The theme for EUPPT 2026 is

Shaping the Future: Play, Plasticity and the Power of Movement in Paediatric Physiotherapy.

But what exactly does that mean?

Play
Play is commonly defined as engaging in activities for enjoyment and recreation, rather than for a serious or practical purpose. But what if we did use play with purpose? In paediatric physiotherapy, play becomes a powerful tool helping us connect, build trust, and form meaningful relationships with children. Through play, we can assess development, act as role models, and guide children and young people towards the movements and skills they need to practice. Play also opens the door to innovation, allowing us to integrate new technologies into therapeutic activities in engaging and accessible ways.

Plasticity
Neural plasticity, also known as neuroplasticity, refers to the brain's ability to adapt by reorganizing its structure, function or connections in response to internal or external stimuli. This remarkable adaptability isn’t limited to the brain; muscles and bones, too, demonstrate plasticity. We harness this capacity through early intervention, motor learning, and even by helping the brain process pain in new ways. Likewise, we draw on muscular plasticity to improve strength, endurance and motor control in our young patients.

The Power of Movement
Movement has the power to transform. For some, it means the physical and mental health benefits of activity. For others, it’s about the empowerment that comes from assistive devices, with or without added power, that enable independent movement. It may also refer to muscular strength or the sheer joy of physical expression. Movement is more than just motion, it’s a basic human right! Through movement, children explore their world, learn new skills, and shape their futures. As physiotherapists, we have the privilege of supporting that journey.
