PD Dr. Abel-Jan Tasman

After my broad surgical ENT training in Heidelberg, I was allowed to focus on rhinosurgery and facial plastic surgery early on. In the three decades that followed, I had the opportunity to follow the development of functional and aesthetic rhinoplasty and see techniques come and go. I had ample opportunity to learn from my own mistakes, too. As the complexity of surgical procedures increased, I explored restraint in indication and simplicity in technique, of rhinoplasty in particular. I enjoy my appointment as head of rhinology and facial plastic surgery at the ENT Department of the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen, Switzerland and my current positions in the boards of the Swiss ENT Society, the Rhinoplasty Society Europe and the European Board for Certification in Facial Plastic Surgery.

Prof. Christian von Buchwald

Professor Christian von Buchwald M.D., D.M.Sc., Copenhagen University Hospital, Chair Professor
In 1997 he introduced imaged guided endoscopic surgery (CAS FESS) in Denmark and in Northern Europe. The concept of Minimal invasive surgery was further pursued in the campaign that led to the establishment of a robotic H&N cancer center in 2013 as an alternative to radiotherapy encountering the increasing number of HPV+ oropharyngeal cancers. The belief in least invasive surgery have always been a core element in his research, and he is one of the pioneers behind The Sentinel Node Biopsy  procedure, which became a part of the oral cavity cancer treatment from 2007. The strive in developing precision surgery is a ongoing concern for him, and in 2020 he became the chairman of the prestigious translational Clinical Academic Group under the title: “Optic Guided Cancer Surgery”.
As part of the Minimal invasive surgery concept it is paramount to secure the best possible conditions for the patient both pre-, per-, and postoperative and he is the leading figure behind several studies in optimal pain treatment in robotic surgery patients, swallowing function and Quality of Life all aiming at optimizing the treatment course for the patients and enhancement of recovery. Furthermore, he is the originator behind stem cell treatment of xerostomia after radiotherapy and the anchor behind the investigation of circulating tumor HPV-DNA that aims at detecting cancer recurrences earlier than current modalities.
He is trained in sinus and advanced skull base surgery, and the fascination for this part of the upper airways is also depicted in the research in Inflammation of the upper airways and the interaction with the lower airways focusing on the on the relation and interaction with CRSwNP,  Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia and the use biologic treatment in inflammatory diseases.
In parallel with his extensive clinical research it has always been a great joy for him to teach pre- and postgraduate students, which is also reflected by his organization of several international yearly H&N dissection courses and by his involvement in several Ph.D.-projects ensuring evidence based training in numerous ENT procedures, spanning from advanced FESS surgery, Ultrasound procedures and emergency cricopharyngectomy.
The international collaboration is a cardinal interest for him, with strong and long lasting affiliations to e.g., M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, USA, Stanford University and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, as the international perspective is crucial in accelerated knowledge and research implementation.
Research areas: Head and neck cancer, HPV, Stem cells, Quality of Life, recovery, Inflammatory diseases, unified airways, Minimal invasive surgery and Optic guided cancer surgery.
