It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 34th congress of the Scandinavian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (SSAI) to be held in Malmö/Lund, 6-8th of September 2017.

Our goal is to offer an excellent scientific program and an outstanding exhibition of the latest treatment options and technology. With an international faculty of renowned experts we will cover most aspects of anaesthesia, intensive care, pain and emergency medicine in four parallel plenary sessions accompanied by sponsored symposia, free paper presentations and workshops. Pre-congress courses will be organized from the 4th of September.

The theme of the congress “From Basic Science of Clinical Practice” is inspired by our collaboration with Lund University and its extensive array of experimental research and deep knowledge in the fundamental disciplines supporting our specialty, ranging from biochemistry, via microbial pathogenesis to clinical measurement. The university was founded as Sweden’s fifth university in 1666, three of the older ones no longer being within our current national borders. Repeatedly being ranked among the top 100 of the world, it is a fully comprehensive university with teaching and research within all academic areas such as science, medicine, law, economics, technology as well as the social science and humanities. With nearly 50 000 students, it is the largest university in Scandinavia. This special collaboration will be shown in a series of update lectures in basic science for established specialists as well as for our residents preparing for their exams e.g. EDAIC and EDIC. Another theme will elucidate the challenges involved in incorporating the methods and results of evidence based medicine into clinical decision making.

The congress venue will be MalmöMässan, providing four large lecture halls, several smaller rooms and an exhibition space allowing infinite opportunities. A few minutes’ walk from MalmöMässan you will conveniently find your hotel accommodation and Hyllie station with frequent trains that in 7 minutes will take you to central Malmö, 19 minutes to Lund, 13 minutes over the beautiful Öresund Bridge to Copenhagen airport and 27 minutes to central Copenhagen. Next door you can succumb to retail therapy in the shopping mall Emporia designed by our renowned architect Gert Wingårdh.

Early September usually provides summer temperatures and we are planning for a social program including sports and other outdoor activities.

Most welcome to Malmö!

Mikael Bodelsson, Congress President
